More than one million Polish zlotys (about $250,000) has been raised in Poland to buy generators for Kyiv as Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy system intensify humanitarian risks.
The fundraiser, launched in mid-January under the slogan “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv,” aims to collect two million zlotys to purchase and deliver 100 generators, with support from several civic organisations.
Ukraine is struggling to restore electricity and heating after massive attacks, leaving Kyiv under emergency power outages for a second week amid temperatures near minus 20 degrees Celsius.
Organisers say the generators will heat shelters for elderly people and children and provide essential services such as boiling water. Within three days, nearly 9,000 donors contributed, prompting Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland to thank Polish supporters for their solidarity.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities warn that Russia may expand attacks on key energy infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, further threatening electricity and heat supplies across the country.
