OPINION: As European NATO members at last showed some backbone and sent military units to Greenland, Trump and his White House cabal have made the short journey from outright threats of military violence to other forms of coercion.
Hence the leader of the free world is now using economic threats against countries that fail to show support for his outrageous insistence on a total takeover of the mineral-rich Arctic territory, never mind the wishes of the 60,000 Greenlanders who live there.
The overgrown toddler and Epstein playmate may have realised that there could be a downside to his plan for an outright invasion, although there are plenty of White House insiders who continue to egg him on, encouraged as they have been by the fireworks in Venezuela and the world’s acquiescence in the US-enabled genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.
As the prospect of US special forces shooting Danish and German defenders might just about be unthinkable, even for Trump, he has hit upon the idea of moving from direct action, punching his victims directly on the nose, to other forms of attack. And what better way to hit other nations hard than to steal the weaklings’ lunch money.
On Friday the Chump said: “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So I may do that.”
A riposte from a leading Danish official was even more amusing: The head of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command in Greenland told Reuters on Friday he is focused on countering potential Russian activity, not defending against US military threats.
