María Corina Machado announced on Thursday that she had offered her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Donald Trump, an award that Trump has coveted for some time despite the fact that during his first year in office he has bombed eight different countries, enabled the genocide in Gaza and threatened to take over Greenland.

Calling the moment “historic,” Machado celebrated finally meeting a US president who has carefully avoided endorsing her as Venezuela’s leader following his kidnapping of the incumbent, Nicolas Maduro.

While Machado’s supporters chanted her name outside the White House, Trump has been conducting state business with Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s vice-president and interim leader.

The Nobel Committee, unimpressed by Machado’s symbolism, reminded everyone that Nobel Prizes are personal and non-transferable, rather like a ticket on easyJet.
