The White House has confirmed that Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado will meet President Donald Trump on Thursday.
The planned meeting follows the recent seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas by US forces, though Trump has stopped short of endorsing Machado, whose coalition claimed victory in the disputed 2024 election. Instead, the United States has backed Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vice-president, as interim leader.
Machado has said she wants to thank Trump for the action against Maduro and suggested giving him her Nobel Prize, a gesture Trump welcomed even as the Nobel Committee clarified the prize could not be transferred.
Trump has voiced mixed views on Machado, saying she lacks sufficient support inside Venezuela while indicating he is open to discussing her role. Machado, meanwhile, has sharply criticised Rodríguez as a key figure in past repression and insists her own coalition should lead Venezuela, while Rodríguez has rejected claims of US control and asserted Venezuela’s sovereignty.
