Britain is planning to develop a new tactical ballistic missile that could become operational as early as late 2026, restoring Ukraine’s ability to strike heavily protected targets deep inside Russia with precision-guided munitions.

According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the initiative—known as Project Nightfall—seeks to produce a ground-launched missile with a range exceeding 500 kilometres and the ability to operate in environments affected by intense electronic warfare.

Each missile, expected to cost up to £800,000, would carry a 200kg conventional warhead and be launchable from either fixed positions or mobile platforms. Three development teams will receive £9 million contracts to deliver prototype missiles within 12 months, with initial production projected at ten missiles per month.

Primarily intended for use by Ukrainian forces, the mobile and fast-flying Nightfall missile would enable rapid strikes on key military targets before Russian forces can react, while also informing future UK long-range strike programs. The project follows earlier UK announcements and tender releases in 2025, with final proposals due in February 2026 and contracts expected to be awarded in March 2026.
