Donald Trump said Iran has reached out to propose negotiations as he considers “very strong” military options in response to the violent crackdown on protesters that has reportedly killed hundreds. He said the administration and military are reviewing the situation closely, suggesting Iran may be nearing a red line he set over the killing of protesters.

Rights groups estimate that between nearly 200 and more than 500 people have been killed and thousands arrested, though figures are likely undercounts due to an internet blackout and lack of official data.

The escalating violence has raised the prospect of US intervention, prompting warnings from Iranian officials that American and Israeli interests could become targets. Meanwhile, opposition figures have urged security forces to side with protesters, as Iran’s leadership blames foreign enemies for the unrest and calls for pro-government demonstrations.
