As Ukraine continues negotiations aimed at ending the war, Russia has intensified attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity and heating during winter.
Nearly 100 drones were launched overnight on Thursday, following another large-scale strike the previous night, with the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions among the hardest hit.
Zaporizhzhia experienced its first region-wide blackout in years late Wednesday, though power and heating were gradually restored by early Thursday, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov. In contrast, the situation in Dnipropetrovsk remained critical, with about one million residents still without water and heating.
Hospitals in the city of Dnipro have been forced to operate partially on generators, prompting officials to describe the blackout as a national emergency. With temperatures expected to fall below minus 10 degrees Celsius, ongoing outages pose growing risks to civilians as repair crews work around the clock.
In his evening address on Thursday, President Zelensky warned he had been told that “another massive Russian attack may happen tonight.”
