Mexico’s Sheinbaum slams Trump over Venezuela

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sharply criticised the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, accusing the Trump administration of destabilising Latin America through aggressive intervention.

She said foreign interference has never brought democracy, prosperity, or lasting stability to the region. Sheinbaum rejected unilateral military actions, warning they undermine peace and development in the 21st century.

Her remarks followed Trump’s threats of further strikes on Venezuela and possible interventions in Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, and Greenland, citing drug trafficking concerns. Sheinbaum stressed that any U.S. military action in Mexico would violate national sovereignty and international law.

She joined other leftist Latin American leaders in condemning the U.S. raid that abducted Maduro and his wife, an operation Venezuela says killed at least 40 people. While right-wing leaders in the region praised Maduro’s removal, Sheinbaum called for regional cooperation, mutual respect, and nonintervention. She also argued that Latin America’s economic strength depends on unity and development, while noting that U.S. weapons trafficking and drug demand contribute to Mexico’s violence.
