The US bombardment of Venezuela and capture of President Nicolás Maduro has reignited fears that Donald Trump could pursue a takeover of Greenland, after figures in his Maga movement openly floated annexation.
Rightwing podcaster Katie Miller posted a map of Greenland draped in the US flag with the caption “SOON,” while Trump told the Atlantic: “We do need Greenland, absolutely.” Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, rejected the idea, saying the US has no right to annex any part of the Danish kingdom, and Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, called the post disrespectful but urged calm.
Danish officials stressed close defence ties with Washington while demanding full respect for Denmark’s territorial integrity, amid heightened Arctic tensions. Trump has repeatedly refused to rule out military action to gain control of Greenland, citing international security and its strategic and mineral value, unsettling European allies and Greenlanders alike.
Polls show most of Greenland’s population favour independence from Denmark but overwhelmingly reject becoming part of the United States, even as analysts warn such a move would be impossible to prevent militarily.
