A left-wing extremist cell is suspected of being behind an arson attack that caused a major power outage in southwest Berlin on Saturday.
The fire damaged high-voltage power lines on a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal near the Lichterfelde power plant, cutting electricity, heating, and internet to about 45,000 households and 2,200 businesses across four districts. Around 35,000 households may remain without electricity until Thursday due to difficult repair conditions amid freezing weather.
An emergency shelter and district care point have been set up to support affected residents. Police are investigating a letter claiming responsibility from the anarchist “Volcano Group,” though its authenticity has not yet been confirmed. Authorities note this is not the first such attack on Berlin’s power grid, but say the current outage has had particularly serious consequences.
