The Institute for the Study of War reported evidence of a Russian presence across 4,952 square kilometres and 245 settlements of Ukraine, while Ukraine’s commander-in-chief said Russia had seized just 0.8 percent of Ukraine’s territory in 2025 at the cost of nearly 420,000 Russian dead and wounded.
Despite months of fighting, Russian forces had failed to capture Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in Donetsk, held only about 55 percent of Hulyaipole in Zaporizhia, and were reportedly being pushed out of Kupiansk in Kharkiv.
Ukraine’s General Staff has estimated total Russian war losses at over 1.2 million casualties, including nearly 11,500 tanks, 24,000 armoured vehicles, more than 37,000 artillery systems, 781 aircraft and over 4,000 missiles.

In the final week of the year, Russia launched more than 1,000 drones and 33 missiles at Ukrainian cities, of which Ukraine said it intercepted 86 percent of the drones and 30 missiles.
