The elephant in the room, of course, is the fact that Russia has shown no intention of moving away from its maximalist demands, which included Ukraine giving up territory in eastern Ukraine that Russia has been unable to seize through military action after almost four years of war.
At a press conference after the meeting, Trump called it a “terrific meeting” and said he felt they were “getting a lot closer, maybe very close” to a deal, while Zelensky thanked Trump for a “great meeting”, adding that a 20-point peace plan was “90%” agreed, as reported by the BBC.
However, no timelines were offered, and a response from Moscow is expected to confirm that there is no real option for peace except capitulation by Ukraine.
