Zelensky expresses optimism on peace deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine and its partners have completed about 90% of a 20-point peace plan to end Russia’s war, ahead of a planned meeting with US President Donald Trump this weekend.

He said Ukrainian and international teams have prepared draft documents on security guarantees and postwar reconstruction, with economic agreements still under development. Zelensky noted the talks, reportedly set for Dec. 28 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, may not finalise all issues but will address remaining disagreements.

He acknowledged ongoing differences with Washington over territorial questions and NATO-related provisions, though Ukraine secured concessions such as freezing the frontline and avoiding any legal renunciation of NATO ambitions.

The plan also raises the possibility of a partial Ukrainian troop withdrawal from eastern Donetsk and the creation of a demilitarised zone. Zelensky said Kyiv is not in direct contact with Moscow, with the United States acting as intermediary, and expects Russia’s formal response in the coming days. Despite diplomatic movement, Moscow has maintained hardline demands, while Zelensky said recent discussions with Trump’s envoys produced “good ideas” that could support a lasting peace.
