India’s capital was engulfed in thick smog on Sunday, prompting authorities to impose emergency anti-pollution curbs as several areas recorded extremely hazardous air quality.

Delhi, home to about 30 million people, has not seen a single “clean air” day in 2025, with AQI levels consistently far above the safe mark of 50. Official data over the weekend showed severe to severe-plus pollution between 400 and 500, while private monitors reported real-time spikes exceeding 550 and even reaching the 700s.

In response, the government activated stage four of the Graded Response Action Plan, the strictest level, for Delhi and its surrounding regions. Measures included halting non-essential construction, shutting stone crushers and mining operations, restricting truck entry, and shifting schools to hybrid or online classes where possible.

Authorities cited adverse weather conditions, but residents expressed frustration, saying government action has been insufficient to protect public health.
Parents described being forced to keep children indoors or online despite concerns about screen time, allergies, and long-term health impacts.

As winter conditions trap emissions from vehicles, construction, industry, and waste burning, many residents point out the crisis has persisted for over a decade and remains visibly unresolved.
