Israel’s Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel intends to retain the Syrian territories it currently occupies and will no longer tolerate threats from Iran’s regional axis. Speaking to Israeli ambassadors, he voiced a hope for a demilitarisation agreement in southern Syria and stressed the need to protect Druze communities.
Netanyahu said Israel views the Syrian Hermon region and the buffer zone as strategic assets it plans to keep. Without irony, he referenced the idea of maintaining the “moral high ground,” adding that Israel will also keep the literal high ground.
Netanyahu dismissed claims that normalisation with Arab states depends on establishing a Palestinian state, comparing such assertions to doubts once raised about the Abraham Accords. He warned against premature interpretations, saying that Israel has already brought about major geopolitical shifts. Netanyahu asserted that Israel will respond decisively to any perceived threats, declaring an end to what he called a period of excessive tolerance.
