Before the huge scandal involving embezzlement from Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company brought his name into headlines, Timur Mindich remained an elusive figure whose growing influence was known mainly within tight-knit circles of Ukrainian and Israeli business elites, the Times of Israel reports.

Mindich, who has deep familial and personal ties to Jewish communal life in Dnipro, reportedly fled to Israel just hours before investigators focussed the spotlight on his expanding role in several lucrative sectors.

His long-standing relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — himself born into a Jewish family — helped fuel suspicions that Mindich’s access in Kyiv was strengthened through shared cultural and social networks.

The extent of his involvement became clear when Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies released a major report accusing him of engineering the $100 million energy embezzlement scheme. Two senior Ukrainian ministers resigned following the probe, intensifying scrutiny around Mindich’s whereabouts in Israel.

Many Ukrainian observers have argued that his ascent was inseparable from his privileged relationship with Zelensky and members of the president’s inner circle, many of whom intersected socially with Jewish communities in Ukraine and abroad.

Mindich’s Jewish family’s long-standing ties to Israel are notable, with his father having died there in 2006, the Times of Israel reports. Mindich himself married in Israel in 2010 during a lavish celebration near the Western Wall, underscoring his strong personal roots in the country.

Even as he became a prominent entertainment entrepreneur and co-owner of Zelensky’s Kvartal 95 studio, his connections to Jewish communal and business networks remained a defining feature of his public profile.

After Zelensky’s 2019 victory, Mindich’s influence expanded alongside his continued presence in Israel, where he was often seen meeting other Ukrainian-born Jewish businessmen. His flight to Israel just before anti-corruption raids has further highlighted how his Ukrainian political rise and Jewish communal ties have intertwined in ways now central to the unfolding investigation.
