Sweden steps up with Gripen jets

Stockholm announced on Thursday that it will send JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to NATO’s newly launched Arctic Sentry mission in Greenland, following the campaign by US President Donald Trump to annex the autonomous Danish territory.

Trump has argued that gaining control of the mineral-rich island is necessary to counter growing Russian and Chinese influence, though NATO’s new mission may weaken that claim. Sweden welcomed the initiative, saying that as one of NATO’s seven Arctic members, it shares responsibility for security in the region.

The Gripen jets will initially be deployed around Iceland and Greenland, and Sweden will also send Air Force and Army Rangers to conduct exercises on Greenland for several weeks. Denmark and Germany are also contributing forces, while NATO leaders stressed that strengthening Arctic coordination must not divert attention from supporting Ukraine and defending the alliance’s eastern flank.
