Two Mexican naval vessels carrying humanitarian supplies arrived at Havana’s port on Thursday amid heightened pressure from the United States over Cuba’s fuel imports.

One of the ships, named the Papaloapan, was seen unloading large pallets of aid as residents watched from the seawall. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the delivery during a news briefing, saying that additional assistance would follow.

Sheinbaum said that Mexico is providing various forms of support and will continue to send help once these ships return. She also framed her government’s actions as fostering dialogue between Cuba and the U.S., while stressing the importance of respecting Cuba’s sovereignty. The arrival of these aid shipments comes as Cuba faces worsening shortages due to U.S. efforts to curb its access to fuel.

Some international airlines have halted flights to the island because of the shortage of aviation fuel. The move heightens the impact of the US policy of sanctions and embargo, in a bid to bring the Communist government to its knees.
