An Al Jazeera Arabic investigation, The Rest of the Story, reports that Gaza Civil Defence teams have documented 2,842 Palestinians who have “evaporated” since October 2023, leaving behind only blood spray or small fragments of remains.
The figure is based on detailed forensic accounting rather than estimates. Civil Defence teams compare the number of people believed to be inside targeted homes with the bodies recovered, classifying missing individuals as “evaporated” only after exhaustive searches find no intact remains.
Experts and witnesses cited in the investigation attribute the phenomenon to Israel’s use of thermobaric or thermal weapons, also known as vacuum bombs. These weapons disperse a fuel cloud that ignites into an intense fireball and vacuum effect, generating temperatures between 2,500 and 3,500 degrees Celsius.
The report also states that additives such as aluminium powder, used in some bombs, can intensify explosions and heat to levels capable of reducing bodies to ash within seconds.
