Netanyahu comes to DC to pressure Trump

Tehran has warned Washington not to let Israel derail talks on Iran’s nuclear programme, as Benjamin Netanyahu heads to the White House on Wednesday amid fears he will try to sideline negotiations.

Netanyahu will be urging Donald Trump not to accept a narrow nuclear deal that ignores Iran’s missiles, regional proxies and human rights record.

Israel worries that Trump’s inner circle is open to a limited agreement that, in its view, leaves Iran’s long-term threat untouched. Netanyahu plans to press his case with fresh intelligence on Iran’s military capabilities, but risks alienating Trump by challenging his trusted advisers and exposing Republican rifts.

The trip comes as Netanyahu’s strained ties with Trump worsen over Gaza, the West Bank and so far ‘unfulfilled’ US pledges to support Iranian protesters.
