Automotive Cells (ACC) has decided to shelve its plans to build battery gigafactories in Italy and Germany, according to Italy’s metalworkers’ union UILM.

The union said ACC management confirmed that the Termoli project in Italy and the planned site in Germany have both been definitively halted. ACC, which is backed by Stellantis along with TotalEnergies and Mercedes-Benz, stated that the projects have been on hold since 2024 due to slower-than-expected growth in electric vehicle demand.

The company added that conditions are not yet in place to restart the projects, as it reassesses strategy and considers shifting to cheaper battery technology.

ACC has begun discussions with unions regarding the potential shutdown of the planned gigafactories in Kaiserslautern and Termoli.

The decision comes amid broader challenges for the EV sector, with Stellantis recently warning of major financial losses and Italy withdrawing EU funding previously allocated to the Termoli site.
