Israel killed at least 23 Palestinians in attacks across the Gaza Strip, including children, marking one of the deadliest days since an October “ceasefire” began, according to medical sources.
Al Jazeera reported that at least 14 people were killed in Israeli shelling of the Tuffah and Zeitoun neighbourhoods of Gaza City, while others died in attacks on tents sheltering displaced people in southern Gaza and at the al-Mawasi coastal camp, including a Palestine Red Crescent first responder.
Residential homes were targeted without warning and intensified military activity has left Palestinians without any sense of respite despite the supposed ceasefire.
Israel’s military said it carried out the attacks after one of its reserve officers was injured during routine operations near the so-called “yellow line” in northern Gaza, a boundary it is reportedly shifting eastward, causing further fear among residents.
Since the ceasefire took effect nearly four months ago, more than 520 Palestinians have been killed, bringing the total death toll since October 7, 2023, to at least 71,803, with rights groups and the UN describing the actions as genocide and a case under way at the International Court of Justice.
Amid the violence, medical evacuations through the Rafah crossing were briefly cancelled and then reinstated, with conflicting explanations from Palestinian and Israeli authorities over coordination issues involving the World Health Organization.
