Ali Shamkhani, a senior Iranian security official and adviser to the supreme leader, said Iran is prepared to respond proportionally to any aggression, including possible strikes on Israel, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

He dismissed claims that the expanding US military presence in the Gulf would give Washington an advantage, saying Iran has exposed its adversaries’ plans and remains on high alert. Analysts say the US military build-up near Iran could signal a potential attack aimed at Iran’s leadership.

Ellie Geranmayeh of the European Council on Foreign Relations warned that while such an attack could be framed by the US as civilian protection, it carries serious risks and no guarantee of improving conditions for Iranians. She said Iran could retaliate by targeting US forces, oil facilities, shipping routes, and allies such as Israel, raising costs for Washington, especially in an election year.

Meanwhile, Turkey has positioned itself as a potential mediator, citing its close ties with Iran, NATO membership, economic links, and the regional impact any conflict would have on its security and trade.
