A Sudanese asylum seeker in the UK, Deng Chol Majek, has been jailed for at least 29 years for the “sadistic” murder of 27-year-old Rhiannon Whyte, who worked at the hotel where he was living.
Less than three months after arriving in the UK by small boat, Majek followed Whyte after her shift and stabbed her 23 times with a screwdriver at Bescot Stadium station in Walsall in October 2024.
The attack, which involved 19 blows to her head, caused a fatal brain stem injury, and Whyte died in hospital three days later, leaving behind a young son. CCTV showed Majek disappearing with Whyte on a deserted platform before the attack, then later calmly buying beer, changing clothes, and dancing back at the hotel while emergency services attended the scene.
A jury unanimously convicted him of murder and possessing an offensive weapon, with the judge describing the crime as one of “vicious brutality” and saying the intent was clearly to kill.
Victim statements from Whyte’s family described Majek as “evil” and “inhuman,” highlighting the devastation caused by his lack of remorse and his behaviour after the killing.
Police said the murder was frenzied, unprovoked, and senseless, and that Majek has never offered any explanation for why he killed her.
The killing is one violent incident among many that has resulted in a surge in support for the UK’s Reform Party, currently leading in opinion polls.
