US President Donald Trump suggested that Russia has temporarily paused attacks on Kyiv and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure after he personally asked President Vladimir Putin to do so.

Ukraine has faced weeks of severe bombardment and freezing temperatures that threatened a humanitarian crisis, particularly in Kyiv, which has suffered widespread blackouts.

Pro-Kremlin war blogger Vladimir Romanov claimed Russia ordered a halt to strikes on Kyiv and nationwide energy facilities from Jan. 28 until further notice, though Moscow has not confirmed this.

Ukrainian war bloggers later reported a parallel Ukrainian order to suspend attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly thanked Trump, saying conditions on the ground would show whether the pause is real. The claims emerged as US, Russian, and Ukrainian officials continue what diplomats describe as the most serious talks since the full-scale invasion, with further negotiations expected soon.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is bracing for an extreme cold snap, with temperatures expected to plunge to -30°C (-22°F) in parts of the country in the coming days, as emergency crews race to restore heating and electricity damaged by Russian attacks, the Kyiv Post reports.
