US President Donald Trump has intensified a public dispute with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, warning on Saturday he would impose a 100% tariff on Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeds with a trade deal with China.
In a social media post, Trump accused Canada of trying to act as a gateway for Chinese goods into the United States and said such a move would not be tolerated. The warning followed Canada’s recent agreement with Beijing to ease tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for reduced Chinese import taxes on Canadian agricultural products.
The clash comes amid broader tensions, including Trump’s remarks questioning Canada’s sovereignty and his push to acquire Greenland, which have strained relations with allies.
Carney responded forcefully, rejecting Trump’s claims and asserting that Canada thrives independently, while positioning himself as a leader among countries seeking to counter US pressure.
Despite ongoing talks, no deal has yet been reached to roll back US tariffs on Canada, even as the two economies remain deeply intertwined through trade, energy, and security ties.
