Amnesty International USA on Saturday condemned the continued presence of ICE and US Border Patrol in American cities, saying the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti shows that federal agents are not making communities safer.
Federal agents are acting with impunity, using deadly force in public, terrorising neighbourhoods, and separating children from their families.
Pretti’s killing is part of a broader pattern of violent, militarised enforcement by ICE that has occurred with little oversight or accountability, including abuses in detention facilities.
Eye-witness accounts of these deadly incidents differ sharply from the official narratives, while Trump continues to support and promote what amount to extra-judicial killings.
Pretti’s death marks the second fatal shooting of a civilian by federal law enforcement this month.
In a statement read on local television, Pretti’s parents said they are devastated and angry, describing their son as a compassionate ICU nurse who cared deeply for his family, friends, and veterans. They disputed official accounts of the incident, said Alex was unarmed while trying to protect a woman, and urged the public to help spread what they say is the truth about their son.
