An unnamed White House official told NBC News that the trilateral meeting between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia that started in Abu Dhabi on Friday was productive and that discussions would continue, a claim also echoed by CNN citing a knowledgeable source.

Russian state media TASS reported that the delegations discussed buffer zones and various control mechanisms, reviving an idea debated since December under different labels.

President Volodymyr Zelensky previously said the United States proposed a “free economic zone” in Donetsk and Luhansk, while Russia described the concept as a demilitarised zone.

In his evening address, Zelensky said Ukraine’s delegation is reporting frequently and is focused on defining parameters to end the war within a clear framework set by Kyiv. However, he cautioned that it is too early to draw conclusions and stressed that Russia must demonstrate readiness to end the invasion it started. Meanwhile, the talks unfold as Ukraine faces a worsening energy crisis amid freezing temperatures and ongoing Russian strikes on power infrastructure.
