Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met in Rome for an intergovernmental summit, where they signed a new German-Italian Action Plan to deepen bilateral and EU cooperation.

The talks focused on strengthening EU strategic autonomy, boosting industrial competitiveness—especially in the automotive sector—and expanding collaboration on defence, energy, and migration.

Both leaders stressed Europe’s responsibility to act as a strong geopolitical player, reaffirming commitments to NATO, transatlantic ties with the United States, and support for Ukraine under international law.

The Action Plan also includes joint efforts on European defence readiness, cybersecurity, and regular consultations between defence and foreign ministers. On the economic front, Italy and Germany pledged to pursue a competitive green transition, protect jobs, and support key industries while maintaining technological neutrality in achieving climate goals.

Migration and cooperation with Africa featured prominently, with initiatives aligned with Italy’s Mattei Plan and Germany’s African Policy Guidelines to promote stability, development, and more effective migration management.
