Volodymyr Zelenskyy sharply criticised European leaders in a fiery speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, accusing them of being stuck in “Greenland mode” by waiting for direction from Donald Trump instead of acting decisively on Ukraine and other crises.
His remarks capped a turbulent week at Davos, where European officials grappled with tensions with the White House over Greenland and several western leaders, led by Canada’s Mark Carney, urged firmer resistance to Trump’s territorial ambitions.
Zelenskyy called for increased pressure on the Kremlin as Trump sent envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow to meet Vladimir Putin in a renewed push for peace talks. Although US support for Ukraine under Trump has been inconsistent, Zelenskyy focused his criticism on Europe, accusing it of complacency and failure to lead.
He reminded the audience that he had issued the same warning in Davos a year earlier, saying that despite the passage of time, Europe still lacked the will to defend itself. Zelenskyy spoke as Ukraine faces a harsh winter, with Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure cutting electricity and heating across Kyiv and other major cities.
