China remains firmly committed to genuine multilateralism and to upholding the international system centered on the United Nations, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun on Wednesday.

His remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the UN should continue to exist because of its potential. Trump also suggested that a proposed “Board of Peace” might one day replace the global organisation.

Guo stressed that regardless of changes in the global landscape, China will continue to defend the UN-centred international system. He added that China will uphold the international order based on international law and the fundamental norms of international relations enshrined in the UN Charter.
