US Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured European leaders at the Munich Security Conference that the United States remains committed to the transatlantic alliance and wants to strengthen its historic partnership with Europe.

He said America does not seek separation but instead aims to renew its shared civilisation and prosperity, emphasising that the US will always have deep roots in Europe. Rubio also criticised European immigration, trade, and climate policies and urged greater defence spending, though his tone was less confrontational than last year’s remarks by JD Vance.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said she felt reassured and described Rubio as a strong ally who supports a stronger Europe. He added that global cooperation must be rebuilt and criticised the United Nations for failing to resolve major conflicts, while warning about the nuclear programme of Iran.

His speech comes as Donald Trump has warned of possible military action if negotiations to limit Iran’s nuclear activities do not succeed.
