The EU’s chief diplomat Kaja Kallas rejected accusations that Europe is in civilisational decline or at risk of disappearing, responding directly to criticism voiced by figures in the United States, including Marco Rubio.
Speaking during a panel hosted by Euronews at the Munich Security Conference, she expressed frustration over persistent negative portrayals of Europe despite its high quality of life and social progress. Rubio had argued that the West needs renewal, criticising migration policies, climate priorities, and what he described as deindustrialisation that has weakened Western nations.
Kallas acknowledged the deep historical and cultural ties between Europe and America but said differences in views are inevitable and suggested some of his remarks were directed at domestic audiences.
She also stressed that the European Union remains appealing, noting that countries such as Ukraine and nations in the Western Balkans continue to seek membership. Additionally, she warned that Russia must not gain more through negotiations than it achieved militarily, cautioning against rewarding aggression.
