While Secretary of State Marco Rubio became the focus of attention at the Munich Security Conference, where European leaders closely watched for reassurance about America’s commitment to its allies, other political figures sang a different tune.

Other American leaders present, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, reminded audiences that political leadership changes over time and encouraged confidence in the enduring strength of US alliances.

Several lawmakers, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, reinforced the importance of cooperation while also warning that inequality and political instability could make authoritarian systems more appealing.

Democratic politicians also voiced concern about domestic political developments, including voting rights and executive authority, reflecting deeper anxieties about the future of American democracy.

Many US officials are working to reassure European partners that the alliance remains solid despite political divisions and shifting foreign policy priorities.
