The US announced an additional $6 million in humanitarian aid to Cuba as the country’s economic crisis worsens and diplomatic tensions with Havana continue to rise.

The assistance, aimed mainly at eastern Cuba after Hurricane Melissa, includes food supplies and solar lamps to be distributed by the Catholic Church and Caritas, with US officials monitoring delivery “to prevent misuse.”

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has accused Washington of enforcing an “energy blockade,” blaming US policies and the halt of Venezuelan oil shipments for the island’s hardship.

US officials rejected these claims, arguing that Cuba’s government has mismanaged resources and failed to provide for its population despite having sufficient funds. While Díaz-Canel has signalled openness to negotiations under equal conditions, the White House insists meaningful change will only come if Havana alters its approach.
