Donal Trump faced widespread backlash after posting a video that depicted Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, prompting accusations of racism from critics across the political spectrum.

Trump has a history of attacking Obama, having previously accused him of “treason” and shared AI-generated memes showing his arrest and imprisonment on Truth Social. The White House refused to apologise for the latest swipe, instead doubling down and dismissing the criticism as “fake outrage.”

Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the video was merely an internet meme portraying Trump as the “King of the Jungle” and Democrats as characters from The Lion King. Anti-Trump Republicans and Democrats alike condemned the post, arguing it promoted overtly racist imagery and crossed a clear moral line. Despite the controversy, the video gained traction online, receiving thousands of likes and reposts on Truth Social.

Late on Friday, in a rare u-turn, the offensive video was removed.
