Kyiv is expected to receive only four to six hours of electricity per day during the rest of February after Russian strikes severely damaged key power plants and high-voltage substations, according to Stanislav Ihnatiev of the Ukrainian Renewable Energy Association.

The heaviest damage was sustained by CHP-6 and the Darnytsia combined heat and power plant, sharply reducing electricity generation and creating serious risks for the city’s heat supply during winter.

Russian forces also targeted critical transmission hubs, including the “Vinnytsia 550” and “Kyivska 750” substations, disrupting long-distance power transmission across Ukraine’s unified energy system.

Restoring these ultra-high-voltage facilities is extremely difficult, as many components are custom-made and can take months or years to replace, leaving little ability to offset shortages through imports or reserves. As a result, Kyiv faces deeper energy deficits, stricter blackout schedules, and increased risks to district heating, especially during periods of extreme cold.
