At least 162 people have been killed by gunmen in Nigeria’s western Kwara state, according to the Red Cross, making it one of the deadliest attacks in recent months.
Kwara Red Cross secretary Babaomo Ayodeji said the toll rose from an earlier figure of 67 as searches for more bodies continue, and police have confirmed the attack without giving casualty numbers.
The assault occurred late Tuesday after recent military operations in the area against what authorities described as terrorist elements. A local lawmaker said the gunmen attacked the village of Woro in the evening, burning shops and the king’s palace, while the traditional ruler’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq condemned the violence, as Nigeria continues to face widespread insecurity from banditry, jihadist insurgency, and intercommunal violence across several regions.
