Donald Trump has praised UK troops who served in Afghanistan, calling them “among the greatest of all warriors,” after earlier remarks suggesting Nato forces avoided frontline combat drew criticism.
In a social media post, he admitted that 457 British soldiers died and many others were injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, stressing the “unbreakable bond” between the UK and the US. He described the UK military as brave, devoted, and second only to the United States.
His comments followed backlash over his claim that allied troops had “stayed a little off the frontlines” during the war. UK prime minister Keir Starmer raised the issue with Trump in a call, where both leaders also discussed honouring fallen soldiers and the need for progress toward a ceasefire in Ukraine.
