A Russian government newspaper has published an article praising Donald Trump while sharply criticising European leaders who oppose a US annexation of Greenland. Rossiyskaya Gazeta portrays European resistance as stubborn and claims Brussels hopes to undermine Trump through US midterm elections.
The paper argues that annexing Greenland would secure Trump’s place in history by expanding US territory and symbolising American greatness. It even warns Trump that backing down would harm Republicans politically, while rapid annexation could reverse that trend.
Moscow’s praise is driven not by admiration for Trump himself, but by the damage his Greenland ambitions cause to transatlantic relations and Nato unity. Russian media openly relish the strain between the US and Europe, seeing any split in the Western alliance as beneficial to Russia. Ultimately, maintaining goodwill with Trump is viewed by the Kremlin as a way to advance its core goal of victory in Ukraine.
