Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin’s top negotiator and close confidant, is expected to travel to Davos this week to meet members of US President Donald Trump’s delegation, potentially complicating a planned US-Ukraine agreement.
His appearance comes as global leaders gather at the World Economic Forum under the banner of dialogue, raising questions about Moscow’s intentions.
Trump is scheduled to deliver a high-profile speech at the summit, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also attending in person.
Zelensky is expected to meet Trump in Davos to sign new security guarantees linked to a possible ceasefire with Russia. Moscow’s sudden confirmation of Dmitriev’s trip has cast doubt on that meeting, with his presence seen as a possible attempt to pre-empt or undermine the deal.
The move is particularly striking given that the WEF cut formal ties with Russia in 2022 and has not invited Russian officials since. Dmitriev, who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund, has been central to Kremlin efforts to influence Washington’s view of the war in Ukraine. Kyiv-born and US-educated, he has served as a key interlocutor in US-Russia talks and is widely viewed as one of Moscow’s most influential diplomatic operators.
