The annual gathering of political and business elites in Davos at the World Economic Forum this week comes as Europe faces a critical crossroads over its relationship with Washington, its economic model and its security architecture.

Davos regulars describing a palpable sense of anticipation ahead of what could be a reassessment of the global order. All eyes are on midweek, when US President Donald Trump is expected to make his first appearance at the summit in six years amid disputes over Greenland, tariff threats against Europe and recent US military actions abroad.

Trump’s keynote speech is likely to focus on domestic economic issues, but he is also expected to press European leaders to abandon what he sees as policies of economic stagnation. His stance on Greenland has triggered sharp criticism from European governments, which warn it risks undermining NATO and damaging transatlantic relations.

At the same time, the war in Ukraine looms large, with President Volodymyr Zelensky hoping to meet Trump in Davos to discuss security guarantees tied to a possible ceasefire.
