Donald Trump has reportedly ordered US special forces to draft plans to invade Greenland, though senior military leaders are resisting on legal and congressional grounds. Advisers around Trump, led by Stephen Miller, are said to be emboldened by recent operations abroad and want to seize the territory, ostensibly before Russia or China can act, while British diplomats believe the move could also serve as an election distraction, although opinion polls in the US show very little support for a military operation to take over Greenland.
Diplomats warn that any such action would put Trump at odds with the UK and could trigger the collapse of NATO. One diplomatic assessment describes a worst-case scenario in which occupying Greenland forces European states to abandon NATO, effectively destroying the alliance from within, a result that more extreme MAGA loyalists would welcome.
Meanwhile, in Venezuela, things are not all going Trump’s way. On Saturday, the State Department advised US citizens to leave the country, following reports that armed pro-regime paramilitaries are setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for Americans, following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro a week ago. The state department warned that militias known as colectivos are attempting to identify and abduct US citizens. It advised extreme caution as limited international flights resume.
