Donald Trump has reiterated his threat to acquire Greenland, saying the US will act there “whether they like it or not,” arguing that otherwise Russia or China would take control.
Speaking to oil and gas executives at the White House, he said the US would pursue Greenland “the nice way or the more difficult way” to prevent rival powers from becoming neighbours.
His remarks have intensified tensions with NATO allies, particularly Denmark, which—along with Greenland—has firmly rejected any attempt at annexation. Despite warnings from Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen that an attack on Greenland would undermine NATO, Trump claimed he supports the alliance and insisted it would not exist without him.
Greenlanders have repeatedly opposed joining the US, with a 2025 poll showing 85% rejection, while only 7% of Americans support a military invasion.
