Denmark would respond immediately with force if the United States attempted to invade Greenland, under a military rule dating back to 1952, its military said on Wednesday. The regulation requires Danish troops to engage any invading force at once, without waiting for orders, even if no formal declaration of war is known.
European leaders, including the UK prime minister, have strongly rejected the prospect of an unwanted US takeover and pledged to defend Greenland’s territorial integrity.
Trump has argued that US control of Greenland is necessary to protect NATO interests from China and Russia in the Arctic. On Wednesday he said: “Russia and China have zero fear of NATO without the United States, and I doubt NATO would be there for us if we really needed them,” he added. “We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us. The only nation that China and Russia fear and respect is the DJT-rebuilt USA.”
