Washington’s military intervention in Venezuela has reignited fears about President Donald Trump’s ambitions toward Greenland, the autonomous Danish territory rich in untapped rare earth deposits.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any US attempt to take Greenland by force would shatter 80 years of transatlantic security and undermine NATO. Danish and Greenlandic leaders have urged calm dialogue, while warning that US threats against a NATO ally could have grave consequences for global security.

Trump claims that the United States needs Greenland for national security, citing its strategic Arctic location and growing importance as polar ice melts and new shipping routes open.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen firmly rejected the idea of annexation, telling Trump to stop applying pressure and respect international law. European countries and the European Union quickly rallied behind Denmark, stressing that borders cannot be changed by force and that only Denmark and Greenland can decide the territory’s future.

The controversy intensified after Trump seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and claimed the US would indefinitely “run” Venezuela and exploit its oil reserves.
