At last, Europeans show support for Denmark

European leaders closed ranks behind Denmark and Greenland on Tuesday after a senior Trump aide – Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff – suggested the US might be prepared to take the Arctic territory by force. Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz issued a rare collective rebuke, declaring that Greenland belongs to its people and that only Denmark and Greenland can decide its future.

While reiterating support for Copenhagen, they sought to avoid a deeper transatlantic rupture by pivoting publicly toward renewed security commitments to Ukraine. The statement followed fresh US rhetoric framing Greenland as a strategic prize, with White House officials refusing to rule out military options and downplaying the likelihood of resistance. Denmark warned that any attack on Greenland would threaten the foundations of Nato and undermine the alliance’s core principle of trust.

Greenland’s leaders responded angrily, rejecting what they termed annexation fantasies and insisting that a small population does not negate their right to self-determination. Last week, Stephen Miller’s podcaster wife last week posted a controversial map of Greenland with a US flag super-imposed, and the word ‘SOON.’ She has countered complaints by claiming the criticisms were ‘anti-semitic.’
