On Christmas Eve, President Donald Trump spent time speaking with children who called in, asking them about their favourite holiday gifts while joking about keeping a “bad Santa” out of the country and downplaying the idea of coal in stockings.
From his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump took part in the annual NORAD tradition that tracks Santa Claus’s journey around the world. While chatting with young callers, Trump assured them that Santa was a good figure and humorously framed it as important to make sure he was not “infiltrated.”
Clearly enjoying the interactions, Trump said he could happily continue talking with children all day, though he noted he would eventually need to return to serious matters, including the war in Ukraine. When asked whether Santa would be upset if cookies were not left out, he replied that Santa would not be angry but might feel disappointed.
Trump also joked about Santa’s “cherubic” appearance, suggesting that cookies would certainly be appreciated. In another exchange, he teased an eight-year-old girl about coal being “clean and beautiful,” a familiar phrase from his political messaging, before acknowledging she really wanted toys instead. After the calls ended, Trump returned to his typical political tone online, posting Christmas messages that criticized his opponents while highlighting economic achievements he attributed to his leadership.
