NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has rejected calls for independent European security framework, arguing that Europe should not break from the United States on defence. His remarks came in response to proposals from Manfred Weber, leader of the European People’s Party, who urged deploying EU-commanded troops to help secure peace in Ukraine…
Rutte said he was fully convinced of continued US commitment to NATO, while stressing that Europe must spend more and take greater responsibility within the alliance.
He emphasised that stronger European defence efforts should complement, not replace, cooperation with the US.
Rutte also noted that NATO extends beyond the EU, pointing out that EU members account for only about a quarter of the alliance’s total economic output. Highlighting shared strategic interests, he said the US and Europe must work together to defend the Arctic and the North Atlantic amid increased Russian and Chinese activity. Rutte warned that Russia could pose a serious threat as early as 2027, but said strong support for Ukraine and higher NATO defence spending would deter any attack.
