The United States has intercepted a third Venezuelan oil tanker, marking a further escalation in tensions with President Nicolás Maduro’s government. Officials did not disclose the vessel’s identity or the location of the operation.

This follows a recent US-imposed blockade on tankers under sanctions and a drone strike campaign reportedly targeting Venezuelan boats, which the administration claims are carrying illegal drugs, though no public evidence has been provided.

Tensions have prompted some members of Congress to push for direct US involvement, while briefings by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth offered little clarity on future plans regarding Maduro. Senators Lindsey Graham and James Lankford expressed support for regime change but stopped short of committing to military intervention.

The US continues to recognise opposition leaders and enforce sanctions against Maduro’s government.
